Why service your beds

A bed that fails is a resident or patient at risk

Profiling beds work hard every day. Regular servicing keeps them safe, avoids costly breakdowns and gives you the maintenance records regulators expect.

Safer for residents and patients

Loose bed rails, failing actuators and damaged cables are serious risks. Routine checks catch them before they cause an incident.

Fewer breakdowns

Planned preventive maintenance finds worn parts early, so beds stay in service instead of waiting for an emergency repair.

Longer equipment life

Well-maintained beds last longer, protecting one of the biggest equipment investments your site makes.

Profiling bed servicing that keeps beds in use

Electric profiling beds are among the most heavily used, and most safety-critical, pieces of equipment in any care home or hospital. Each one has motors, a control box, handsets, cables, rails and castors that wear with daily use. Without regular servicing, small faults turn into breakdowns, beds come out of service, and the risk to residents and patients goes up.

Shepherd services and repairs electric profiling beds, manual beds and cots from all major manufacturers, on quarterly, six-monthly or annual schedules, or as one-off visits when you need them.

What a bed service covers

Every bed is checked in line with the manufacturer's guidance. That includes:

  • Movement and function: backrest, knee break, height, tilt and any CPR or emergency functions
  • Electrical safety: control box, actuators, handsets, cables, plugs and strain relief
  • Bed rails: correct fitting and security, and gaps that could create an entrapment risk
  • Mobility: castors, central locking, brakes and steering
  • Structure: frame, welds, platform sections, head and foot boards, and all fixings
  • Mattress compatibility: mattress fit and cover condition, noted for your records

Bed rails and entrapment risk

The MHRA's guidance on the management and safe use of bed rails (updated August 2023) warns that bed rails which are poorly fitted, incompatible with the bed or mattress, or that leave dangerous gaps can cause falls and fatal entrapment of the head, neck or chest. Checking bed rails is a standard part of every bed service we carry out: we check fit and security, measure the gaps that matter, and flag any issue in your report with a clear recommendation.

Fast repairs, often on the first visit

When a bed breaks down, you need it back in service quickly. Our engineers carry an extensive range of spare parts in their vehicles, so many repairs, including actuators, handsets, castors and cables, are completed on the first visit, even for beds that weren't due a service. Before an engineer is booked, our team can often talk your staff through first-level fault finding over the phone.

Authentic parts, whatever the make

As an independent company, we aren't tied to one bed manufacturer. We work with the major manufacturers, hold their technical manuals and parts lists, and only fit authentic parts from the original manufacturer or a recommended producer.

Clear records for every bed

Every bed is barcoded on our first visit. After each service you receive a full electronic report showing what was checked, what was repaired and anything that needs attention, giving you a complete maintenance history per bed. That's ideal for CQC inspections, internal audits and planning replacements.

Need new beds as well? We also supply profiling beds and mattresses, and hire beds when you need cover or extra capacity. Dynamic mattresses on your beds can be serviced on the same visit.

Bed repair call-outs

Repair call-outs start from £69 + VAT, including the first hour on site. Book one with the repair button at the top of this page, or call us: our team can often talk your staff through simple fault finding first.

FAQs

Bed servicing FAQs

How much does a profiling bed service cost?

Bed servicing starts from £23 + VAT per bed, and repair call-outs from £69 + VAT including the first hour. The exact price depends on how many beds you have and what else we service on the visit. You'll get an itemised quote first, with no minimum number of beds.

How often should a profiling bed be serviced?

Most manufacturers recommend servicing electric profiling beds at least once a year. Beds in heavy use, such as on busy hospital wards or in nursing homes, often benefit from six-monthly checks. We'll recommend a frequency for each bed during your free site survey.

Do you repair beds from any manufacturer?

Yes. We service and repair beds from all major manufacturers. We hold the technical manuals and up-to-date parts lists, and fit authentic parts from the original manufacturer or a recommended producer.

Can you fix a broken bed on the same visit?

Often, yes. Our engineers carry an extensive range of spare parts, including common actuators, handsets and castors, so many faults are fixed on the first visit, even on beds that weren't scheduled for a service.

Do you check bed rails?

Yes. We check that bed rails are correctly fitted, secure and compatible with the bed and mattress, and check for gaps that could create an entrapment risk, in line with MHRA guidance on the safe use of bed rails.

Can you service beds and hoists on the same visit?

Yes. Bed servicing can be combined with LOLER hoist inspections and servicing for your other equipment, under one contract and one report.
