Why bathing equipment needs checks

Safe, available bathing

Assisted bathing equipment combines electrics, lifting and water, which is exactly why it needs regular, specialist checks.

Water is hard on equipment

Moisture, cleaning chemicals and limescale attack seals, actuators and fixings faster than in any other room.

Bath hoists and bath lifts mean LOLER

A bath hoist or bath lift raises and lowers a person, so it needs a thorough examination at least every six months.

Bathing is about dignity

When the bath or bath hoist is out of action, residents miss out. Planned servicing keeps it available.

Bathing equipment we service

We examine, service and repair the bathing equipment found in care homes, nursing homes, hospitals and SEN schools, including:

  • Bath hoists and bath-side lifting seats, mobile and fixed
  • Height-adjustable and rise-and-fall assisted baths, including baths with integrated transfer seats or stretchers
  • Shower trolleys and height-adjustable shower stretchers
  • Shower chairs and commode shower chairs

LOLER, PUWER and bathing equipment

HSE's guidance on how LOLER applies to health and social care draws a clear line:

  • Bath hoists (which lift a person from outside the bath into it) and bath lifts (which raise and lower a person within the bath) are lifting equipment. They need a thorough examination by a competent person at least every six months, with a written report.
  • Height-adjustable (recliner) baths and shower trolleys are not treated as lifting equipment, so LOLER doesn't apply. PUWER still does: they must be maintained in a safe condition and inspected where they can deteriorate.

Manufacturers also recommend a full service of bathing equipment at least once a year. We cover the LOLER examinations, PUWER inspections and servicing on the same visit, along with the hoists and slings elsewhere in your building.

Why bathrooms need extra attention

Bathing equipment works in the harshest conditions in the building. Moisture gets into electrics, cleaning chemicals degrade seals and plastics, and limescale builds up in valves and inlets. During every visit we check seals, fixings and water connections as well as the lifting mechanism, so small leaks and corrosion are found before they cause a breakdown or a slip.

Repairs

Common faults include failed actuators, worn seals, leaking valves and controls that stop responding. Our engineers carry common parts, and repair call-outs start from £69 + VAT including the first hour. If a bath or hoist isn't safe to use, we label it out of service and give you a clear repair quote straight away.

FAQs

Bathing equipment FAQs

Does a bath hoist need a LOLER inspection?

Yes. Bath hoists and bath lifts raise and lower a person, so LOLER requires a thorough examination at least every six months. Height-adjustable baths aren't lifting equipment under HSE guidance, but PUWER still requires them to be maintained and inspected.

How much does assisted bath servicing cost?

Servicing and LOLER examinations start from £45 + VAT per bath or bath hoist. The price depends on the type of equipment and how many items we see on the visit. You'll get an itemised quote first.

Do you service shower trolleys?

Yes. We service height-adjustable shower trolleys and shower stretchers. They're covered by PUWER rather than LOLER, so they need regular maintenance and inspection rather than a six-monthly thorough examination.

Can you repair an assisted bath that's leaking?

Often, yes. Leaks usually come from worn seals, valves or connections. We diagnose the cause and quote for the repair; many common parts are carried in our vans.

Which bath makes do you service?

We service bathing equipment from all major manufacturers. Tell us the make and model when you book and we'll make sure the engineer has the right manuals and parts.
